A Summer in Sacramento: Best Lakes

With temperatures surging in the high nineties, keeping cool is everyone’s mission here in the Sacramento area. Luckily for us, there are tons of swimming lakes in the area. We’ve gathered a list of some of the best lakes in Folsom, Granite Bay, Sacramento and surrounding cities that you’ll love to dip your toes in this summer. Which is your favorite? Let us know!

FOLSOM LAKE


Nestled at the base of the scenic Sierra Nevada foothills, Folsom Lake is known to offer visitors plenty of water activities and beach recreation.  There are five major day-use areas on the lake, including Granite Bay, Beals Point, Folsom Point, Negro Bar, and Nimbus Flats. On the western shoreline, Granite Bay and Beals Point, offer large day-use areas that include swim beaches, boat-launch facilities, restrooms, landscaped picnic areas, snack-food and beach-equipment concessions, trailheads, and parking. The Granite Bay also has a 69-site campground, whereas the eastern shoreline (Brown’s Ravine and Folsom Point) has wet slips, boat launches, and trailheads.

LAKE CLEMENTINE


Located on a thin boulder in the North Fork American River, Lake Clementine is a visit-worthy destination above the picturesque, California Gold Rush-era town of Auburn.  This lake offers boat-in campsites equipped with restrooms, picnic tables and fire rings. Aquatic sports are available on the lower lake, while swimming and white sandy beaches are offered at the upper lake. If you want to see something magical, be sure to visit the lake before sunrise.

LAKE NATOMA


Want to take in the historic views of Old Folsom and indluge in lake activities such as stand up paddleboarding or kayaking? Lake Natoma checks off all of those things and more. Lake Natoma has miles and miles of paved bicycle trails, multi-use trails and is excellent for year-round bank or boat fishing. Two launch ramps provide continuous boat launching access year-round. Motorized boating is also allowed, but topped with a 5 mph speed limit. If you’re into fishing, you won’t be surprised to find rainbow trout, brown trout, black bass, crappie and bluegill at Lake Natoma.

SHASTA LAKE


Dubbed the largest reservoir in California, Shasta Lake is the perfect place to enjoy a summer day. During this time, Shasta is filled with jet skis, fishing boats, and almost anything that floats. What makes Shasta pretty unique as compared to the other lakes on this list is its houseboats that are available to rent. Apart from scenic views of the lake, there are also other worthwhile stops around it, including a free tour of the Shasta Dam, the second-largest dam in the country, at 602 feet.

LAKE TAHOE


They call Lake Tahoe the “Jewel of the Sierra Nevada,” and the moment you see it, you get why. Lake Tahoe is a summertime paradise, a winter wonderland, and a year-round haven for magical mountain memories. Whether you visit South Lake or kick things off in hip-and-happening Reno, Lake Tahoe will not disappoint. The possibilities for fun at Lake Tahoe are endless from boating to parasailing or dining or gambling, you’ll have more of your fair share of fun at this lake.
