Ways to Keep Cool This Summer in Sacramento

Summer in Sacramento is no joke! With temps often climbing into the triple digits, staying cool becomes more of a mission than a luxury. While some lucky families have pools in their own backyards, there are still plenty of local spots to beat the heat and have some fun while you're at it.

Whether you're in the mood for an outdoor adventure, a splash in the pool, or a cold treat, we’ve rounded up some of the best ways to cool down this summer—all right here in Sacramento and the surrounding areas!

hit the local pool

Not everyone has access to a private pool, but Sacramento has some top-notch community aquatic centers that are perfect for summer fun. The Barbara Morse Wackford Community & Aquatic Complex in Elk Grove is a family favorite. It features a water playground complete with slides and interactive features, three different pools, and even a deep-water obstacle course inflatable called “Double Trouble”—think of it as Wipeout for water lovers! Over in Folsom, the Steve Miklos Aquatic Center offers something for everyone with a 50-meter Olympic-sized pool, a water slide, diving boards, and a children's activity pool. Both locations offer public swim hours and family-friendly amenities that make them a great go-to for staying cool all summer long.

Float the River

If you’ve never floated down the Sacramento River, now is the time! This mellow summer tradition is a great way to connect with nature while keeping cool. The Sacramento River offers a calm, meandering flow that’s ideal for tubing, kayaking, or canoeing. You’ll pass by scenic farmland, shaded riverbanks, and might even spot some wildlife along the way. Make sure to pack sunscreen, a life vest, and some snacks for a relaxing day on the water. It’s a great option for a peaceful retreat just minutes from city life.

Visit a Local Splash Pad

Sacramento’s parks are an underrated gem in the summer. With more than 226 parks across 3,200 acres, many include free or low-cost splash pads and water features. One standout is the Bridgeway Island Spray Park in West Sacramento. It has a huge spray zone with water cannons, splash features, and shaded picnic areas—perfect for families. And while the Wackford Aquatic Complex doubles as a pool, it also has an awesome aquatic playground that younger kids love. It’s like a mini water park right in your neighborhood!

Grab Some Ice Cream at Leatherby’s

Nothing beats the heat like a cold treat! Leatherby’s Family Creamery is a Sacramento staple (and a team fave!) for a reason. Family-owned since 1982, Leatherby’s is known for its huge sundaes, creamy house-made ice cream, and old-school diner vibe. Whether you're craving a classic banana split, a towering sundae, or just a scoop of cookies and cream, this is the spot to indulge and cool down. Bonus: it’s as much about the experience as the treat itself.

Cold Drink at a Local Brewery or Coffee Shop

Sacramento is home to some seriously refreshing drink options. For something a little stronger, local distilleries like Midtown Spirits and Urban Roots roll out frozen slushie cocktails during the summer—perfect for those hot afternoons. Prefer caffeine over cocktails? Coffee favorites like Old Soul Co., Pachamama, and Temple Coffee Roasters all offer iced lattes, teas, and cold brews that’ll keep you cool and caffeinated. It’s the perfect excuse to try something new from the summer menu.

Hit the Water Slides at Golfland Sunsplash

If you’re craving all-day water fun, head over to Golfland Sunsplash in Roseville. This water park has it all—from high-speed water slides and a lazy river to wave pools and play zones for younger kids. It’s a one-stop shop for thrill-seekers and families alike. Whether you're racing down the Thunder Falls or floating under the sun, it’s the ultimate place to cool off with a side of adrenaline.

Pick Up a New Water Sport at Sacramento State Aquatic Center

For those who want to mix fun with a little adventure, the Sacramento State Aquatic Center at Lake Natoma is the perfect summer destination. Just outside of downtown, this center offers lessons, camps, and equipment rentals for everything from sailing and windsurfing to kayaking, rowing, wakeboarding, and more. Whether you're looking for a relaxing paddle or want to try your hand at waterskiing, it’s a great way to beat the heat while picking up a new hobby. Equipment rentals start at just $12 per hour, making it an affordable and exciting way to spend your summer day.
