Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Fall is a great time to finish larger projects you may have in your home. The weather is cooler and since you may be spending more time due to the pandemic, taking on a few home maintenance projects may be just the thing to keep you occupied and your home in tip-top shape. But where do you start? Thanks to HouseLogic from the National Association of Realtors, and Housebeautiful.com,  we have compiled the perfect list of what you can accomplish before the winter season hits!

1. Stow Your Mower

The most important thing to know when owning a lawn mower is that you cannot keep the gas inside its tank for long periods of time. The gas inside the chamber begins to deteriorate the metal, leaving you with a damaged mower. Purchasing a fuel stabilizer can help to prevent this. Once your mower is cleaned, you can stow it away for safe keeping.

3. Change Your Batteries

Checking on your batteries is one of the most important things to do in your home when it comes to your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. Fall is the perfect time to make sure the batteries are fresh. You’ll be running the heater and fireplace more next season, so making sure your detectors are in good working condition should be a priority in the fall.

4. Prune Your Plants

Late fall is the best time to prune plants and trees. Your goal is to keep limbs and branches at least three feet from your house so that moisture doesn’t drip onto roofing and siding, and to prevent damage to your house exterior during high winds. Plants included that you should prune in the fall are lavender, hydrangea and gardenia.

5. Seal Cracked Airways

Grab a couple of tubes of color-matched exterior caulk. Walk around your home’s exterior, sealing up cracks between trim and siding, around window and door frames, and where pipes and wires enter your house. Preventing moisture from getting in your walls is one of the least expensive of your fall maintenance jobs.
