What started out as a joke by male medical students in 1847, became what we recognize today as National Women Physicians’ Day. This is when we can honor the path that female doctors have paved since the 1800s. Women have made so many achievements in the field of medicine beginning with Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in America to earn a medical degree. Our team thought we’d celebrate by sharing a few stories from some of our clients who are women physicians.

ASHLEY | UC DAVIS MEDICAL

Hi, I'm Ashley! I'm originally from Mesa, Arizona and moved to Sacramento 2 years ago to complete my Anesthesiology residency at UC Davis. My husband and I recently welcomed our first baby boy, Hudson. He is 3 months old and full of giggles:) We love anything outdoors whether it's hiking in the mountains or relaxing under the sun at the beach! One of our favorite activities is snuggling with our sweet Mini Aussies, Gracie and Lulu. The best part of being a doctor in Sacramento is all of the wonderful people I get to work with every day! Being a physician and a mother are two of the most challenging yet rewarding jobs and I feel so proud to be a woman in medicine.

Hi! My name is Dr. Sneha Swaminathan, I’m a General Surgery resident at UC Davis Medical Center, and a relatively new transplant to Sacramento. My favorite part about being a surgeon is the planning, tools, and meticulous movements required to make an operation successful. My favorite part about being a doctor in this city is being able to treat the vibrant and diverse population that lives in or travels to Sacramento for care.
