Forget New Year Resolutions. Reset Instead & Achieve Any Goal

New year, new goals, right? But how many times have you set a New Year’s resolution just for it to fizzle out before Valentine’s Day? If your resolutions rarely come to fruition, it’s time to ditch them and hit your proverbial “reset button.” Here’s how to rethink goal setting with an approach that works, no matter how ambitious your New Year’s goals may be.

1. Prioritize Well-Being & Self-Care

It’s official — hustle culture is so 2019. It can be easy to overwork yourself, become overwhelmed, and get burnt out while in pursuit of your goals, but after nearly two years of the ups and downs of our COVID-19-induced “new normal,” working around the clock with hopes of great gains and rewards is counter-productive. This year, focus on taking care of yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally. Taking time to slow down, do less, and prioritize your wellbeing may actually improve productivity, according to a Forbes article asserts.

2. Keep It Simple

Rather than trying to adhere to a long list of diet changes, workout commitments and unachievable “relationship goals,” tackle the new year with a slow and steady approach. According to personal growth influencer Aileen Xu, you can create a simple reset routine that includes “organizing, self care, or taking care of life admin tasks.” Your reset routine should be made up of simple actions you can take when feeling overwhelmed, which will help you achieve a clean slate.

3. Give Yourself Space & Grace

If you’re familiar with the feeling of not having enough time or energy to “do it all,” this year aim for consistent opportunities for rest as well as space and time to be intentional in diverting your attention away from long-term goals. Living in the here and now will help take the pressure off. By giving yourself grace, you will stress less when your to-do lists are incomplete.

4. Take (More) Breaks

Before you burn out or break down, be intentional with giving yourself consistent, frequent breaks throughout the day. Doing so will allow you to return to the more “important stuff” energized with more headspace and productivity. Try stepping away from your laptop for five minutes every hour. Stand up, walk around, grab a healthy snack. You’ll be amazed at how much more things you get done by giving yourself breathers.
